Subject lines… the “make or break” point for business email.
Although subject lines are short (a good length is between 6 – 10 words), they are a copywriter’s biggest writing challenge.
(By the way, when President Obama was running his election campaign, their most successful fundraising email only had one word: “Hey.”)
Here’s the truth: The shortest copy to write is often the most difficult. However, here are a few tips:
Write two subject lines for each of your emails. When you send out your email and notice that some folks didn’t open your first email within 24 hours, simply re-send the same email to them but use the second subject line. Easy-peasy!
You’ll also get some insights regarding the types of subject lines that perform well. Take note of which subject line performs the best. It can help you create better subject lines in the future.
Want to check your subject line to make sure it makes it past a spam filter? Check out subjectline.com. It’s free and you’ll get a score that either green-lights it or gives it a “red flag.”
Have fun with your subject lines but just make sure your promise in the subject line is fulfilled with your email copy.
