Now, I ain’t sayin’ she a gold digger
But she ain’t messin’ with no broke bloke –
Kanye West, “Gold Digger”

In 2005, I was working in a warehouse when I first heard Kanye West’s song, “Gold Digger.”

A co-worker rode by on a forklift, singing the refrain at the top of his lungs (with some lively hip action, too).

The song is about the hapless life of a man who married a manipulative woman who only wants money.

We all know the negative stereotype of a “gold digger.”

But back in the 1800’s, there was another kind of gold digger.

The “Death Valley ‘49ers” were men who followed the Gold Rush in California, traveling from the East and enduring a difficult journey in order to get the opportunity of a lifetime.

It was tough slogging.

They had to go through Utah through the Great Basin Desert in Nevada, Death Valley, and the Mojave Desert to reach Sutter’s Fort – the premiere gold prospecting area.

These men sacrificed a great deal to make the trip. They borrowed money, mortgaged their property or spent their life savings to make the rough journey to California.

In order to obtain the kind of wealth they had never dreamt of, they left their families and everything familiar to them. They traveled across unforgiving terrain just to have a chance at hitting the mother lode.

Sound familiar?

Those pioneers were similar to today’s entrepreneurs who are doing the same thing.

You also have likely sacrificed a lot to start your business.

Borrowed money… mortgaged property… dipped into life savings.

It’s because you have a dream.

The same kind of dream that motivated a bunch of scrappy men to travel thousands of miles to dig dirt in a mine with the hope of finding gold.

The dream may vary from person to person, but the ultimate goal is FREEDOM.

To be successful enough to call your own shots. Do what you love to do.

And have more choices.

But just like the 49er’s needed to get equipped for the monumental task set before them, you also need the right tools in order to make your business a success.

In December 2018, I started a weekly newsletter called “The Gold Digger.”

It’s dedicated to YOU, the hard-working business owner who just won’t quit. Who will keep digging and digging until you find your very own vein of gold.

Consider me your partner, digging right alongside of you… finding the right tools for you to test out as we figure out what works best.

I’ll also share the good, the bad, and the fugly. As someone wise said, there are victories and then there are lessons. Funny that failure is often a better teacher than success. But without those lessons, we usually never get the “wins” we so badly want.

So let’s dig together! Have some fun, too, while we do it.

I promise I’ll keep it lively. And if you catch me whistling a tune, feel free to join in.

After all, Snow White’s dwarfs can’t have all the fun…
