Is your marketing a mirror image of someone else?

I just read the story about two brothers who married women who were also sisters.

But get this: both sets of siblings are identical twins.

These identical twin brothers look so much alike that apparently, it’s nearly impossible to tell them apart, even by their voices.

On their wedding day, their guests and even their own parents had a tough time identifying them.

They had to check and double-check to make sure they weren’t marrying the wrong partners. (Sounds like the plot for a great romantic comedy film.)

So the twin brothers came up with an unusual solution.  They’re getting plastic surgery to change their faces slightly so people have an easier time telling them apart.

Doctors are working on the case. They’ll perform corrective microsurgery on the twin brothers’ faces in order to make them slightly different  but still similar.

It’s kind of a funny story. But it also reminded me of how often this happens  with business websites.

All. The. Time.

For years, I worked as a marketing manager within an information security company. IT seems to be rampant with corporate jargon.

I’ve joked around that if you just switched out the logo and brand colors on most of these websites, you’d never know the difference.

These websites are too identical to their competitor’s websites. They all use the same language.

When I first launched my own website, I had the luck of running into a top-notch copywriter who agreed to take a look and give me feedback.

“Oh my god,” she said. “You’ve got to change it. It has no personality at all… nothing demonstrates how you’re different.”

I learned a ton from that phone conversation. She shared with me insider tips on how to create a unique ‘digital footprint.’  Today I do the same with my own clients. I help them discover the unique features of their business in  order to make an impact.

Because who wants to be mistaken for someone else? I don’t.

And I don’t think you do, either.  Why not reach out and give your website a facelift?

And who knows? It might be the beginning of a long, prosperous relationship.
