Sometimes my subscribers ask me this question:
“Mary Rose, how do you come up with all your ideas?”
Good question.
Brian Kurtz, who was the Executive V.P. of Marketing at Boardroom, Inc. for almost 34 years (one of the top direct marketing companies in the U.S.), said this about copywriters:
“One of the most important traits a copywriter can have is a strong sense of curiosity.”
My sense of curiosity started when I was a young girl but I’ve cultivated it throughout my life.
It all started with one question:
Why?
- Why is my teacher concerned?
- Why is my friend happy?
- Why is my brother annoyed?
- Why do women worry?
- Why do men like football?
- Why does anyone think Miley Cyrus is a good idea?
Okay… kidding on that last part (kind of) but you get (heh)… the idea.
Curiosity is what drives you to discover new things and acquire knowledge. Equipped with knowledge, you advance… grow… and develop.
One of my favorite haunts as a young girl was the College Hill Library in Cincinnati, Ohio.
A neighborhood friend and I would ride our bikes together for three miles, carefully crossing the busy intersections in order to finally arrive at the magical place.
At least it seemed like magic to me. It was full of a crazy-amount of books and I always felt like a kid in a candy store.
That’s how it all started for me.
Now the Internet delivers information to you with the click of a mouse button. But for me, nothing beats visiting a book store or a library and just browsing around, seeing what one might find.
Ideas can come from anywhere. Books. Movies. Magazines. TV shows. Special presentations.
The trick is to keep your eyes open and ask questions.
Why? How? When? Where? Who?
You’ll get fresh insights quickly when you do that.
Speaking of fresh insights, I’m available to help you notice them – and more importantly – use them to grow your business.
